Mission Statement for Take Back The Night Detroit
The mission of Take Back The Night Detroit is to eradicate all forms of sexual violence—including rape and child sexual abuse—by raising awareness and promoting prevention, and to support survivors as they cast off shame and guilt and access the help they need on their journey toward healing and wholeness.
Goals:
- To send a loud and clear
message that sexual assault survivors in the city of Detroit,
specifically women of color, no longer have to suffer in silence and
isolation.
- To publicly proclaim that sexual assault and abuse in our community is unacceptable, inexcusable and will not be tolerated.
- Join us for an event organized by and for women of color that will raise our community’s consciousness about the effects of sexual violence and its impact on metro Detroit, as well as provide support to survivors and inspire all to hope and to heal.
A History of Take Back the Night
Founded by the former Women of Color Task Force, an initiative that worked to establish sisterhood among Women of Color through the work of the Michigan Coalition to End Domestic and Sexual Violence, Take Back The Night Detroit is an event that centers the empowerment of survivors of domestic and sexual violence, especially for communities of color. Take Back The Night Detroit is done in homage to this taskforce, as an extension of its purpose to advocate for and celebrate community healing from domestic and sexual violence.
